As the Head of Environment Delivery, you will have the opportunity to influence energy infrastructure planning decisions across a range of sectors including offshore wind, large solar farms, energy from waste plants and carbon capture use and storage. We want you to use your environmental knowledge, skills and experience to inform decisions for Nationally Significant Energy Infrastructure Projects.
The post is part of the operational delivery management team and will have a key role in ensuring we meet our objectives by helping Ministers to make timely decisions on planning applications. This involves assessing technical environmental information and providing advice to Ministers and senior officials on the environmental risks associated with consenting such projects.
You will provide support to a critical and sometimes contentious function, which enables nationally significant energy infrastructure projects to proceed, putting the role at the heart of meeting energy security, price stability and Net Zero carbon objectives. This work is a priority of the Secretary of State and critical to both the Clean Energy Mission and the Growth Mission.

Key responsibilities
• Working alongside the existing Grade 7 Environment Delivery Manager to manage and lead a small team providing oversight and direction of their work delivery, priorities and objectives. It is currently expected that the post holder will have direct line management responsibility for four SEO team members.
• Ensuring the comprehensive and timely delivery of Habitats Regulations Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessment screening, scoping and reviews of Environmental Statements for energy related Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects and electricity network & pipeline applications.
• Working with case managers and legal advisors to ensure that proposed energy developments are environmentally acceptable and that appropriate mitigation and compensation can be secured through consent conditions.
• Ensuring the comprehensive and timely delivery of decisions relating to the discharge of consent conditions by DESNZ arising from Habitats Regulations Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, and Marine Conservation Zone Assessments, including subsequent Monitoring Reports.
• Considering and advising on responses from interested parties and statutory advisors that are relevant to our Habitats Regulations Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessment and Marine Conservation Zone responsibilities.
• Communicating and summarising complex information to a wide variety of stakeholders including Ministers to inform the decision-making process.
• Representing the department on government and industry forums and technical working groups.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria
• Have a relevant environmental sciences undergraduate degree and/ or significant demonstrable previous experience of UK environmental legislation and the process of assessing environmental impacts from significant developments such as Habitats Regulations Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments.
• Enjoy working at pace to deliver a timely, customer focused service to statutory deadlines.
• Can explain and communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively.
• Have the ability to lead, support and develop a high performing team.
