Help protect your local environment

About us

At the Environment Agency, we put the environment at the heart of everything we do. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife has never been more important, and our work helps ensure that people can enjoy nature for generations to come. But we can’t do it alone. Our people do incredible work, day in, day out. That’s why we’re committed to providing them with everything they need to do the best work they can, plus a substantial leave allowance, generous pension scheme and flexible working patterns.

About the role

As a Waste Permitting Officer, you’ll help protect the environment and support sustainable economic growth through determining applications for environmental permits and licenses. Alongside assessing permit applications, you’ll provide advice and guidance to internal and external customers, and support the Environment Agency in flooding and environmental incident response. Our Waste Teams carry out crucial work that touches every aspect of UK life, and impacts everything from the economy to people and wildlife. As a part of this team, you’ll make your own contribution to safeguarding our natural environment. You’ll also be supported through training and development initiatives to build on your existing skills, and develop new ones.

About you

You’ll have knowledge or experience in environmental management and environmental risk assessment, and technical knowledge of some sectors and amenity issues relating to Waste Permitting. Previous experience of environmental permitting is also desirable. You’ll be a team player, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external customers. You’ll also have great organisational, decision making, and time management skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. On a personal level, you’ll be passionate about the environment, and have the drive and willingness to learn about environmental regulation.
