The Role
We now have an exciting opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic individual to join us and be part of the North London Waste Authority (NLWA).
To implement the Waste Prevention Plan for north London and communicate the waste prevention and recycling message to residents, we attend a variety of events to encourage waste reduction and recycling. Our outreach work ranges from providing stands at supermarkets to attending large weekend summer events as well as delivering talks to community groups and residents’ associations. In the role of the Waste and Recycling Engagement Officer you will be promoting waste reduction and recycling to the public. Working for North London Waste Authority (NLWA) you will engage with the public within the NLWA area on waste issues, raising awareness and highlighting the benefits of reducing and recycling waste and the services and initiatives available whilst contributing to behavioural change.
This is a full-time (36 hours/week) role but due to the nature of our work you will need to be flexible and available to work some weekends and on occasions in the early evenings, with seasonal peaks in the summer. Reasonable notice will be given under these circumstances.
About you
You will also need to transport and set up our display stands, where necessary using our van, so a full driving licence is essential.
The knowhow and confidence to provide quality advice and awareness-raising to staff and community groups including at public meetings is essential. This will also include the ability to communicate effectively at all levels with audiences that have varying degrees of knowledge and understanding of waste related issues, in order to maintain stakeholder relationships.
You will have experience of organising a high volume, varied workload without day to day supervision, preferably in a waste-related role.
70 -80% (depending on seasonality) of the working week will be spent out of the office delivering engagement activities, some of which will be outdoors.
About Camden
The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is the statutory waste disposal authority for seven north London boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest). NLWA is responsible for managing the disposal of almost 850,000 tonnes of waste every year across seven north London Boroughs.
Reducing waste, improving recycling and making the best use of rubbish we can’t reuse is our challenge for the future. We currently produce enough electricity for 72,000 homes from the rubbish we can’t reuse but we are also looking at replacing our existing plant with a new energy-from-waste facility and diverting some of the energy to warm local homes and businesses via heat networks in the future. At the same time we are working towards our aim of achieving a 50% recycling rate by 2020, while also significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Although based in Haringey, the post holder will be employed by London Borough of Camden from whom you can expect an exceptional range of benefits recognising and rewarding high performance with progression and pay increases, flexible and agile working hours and benefiting from a leading pension scheme.
Camden is proud to be the country’s first Timewise council and as part of this accreditation, we work to help parents balance work with childcare. This fits in with our aim to be leaders in innovative flexible and part-time working that allows for different patterns of care and for parents to share childcare responsibilities.
