Description

For over 50 years, the Scottish Wildlife Trust has worked with its members, partners and supporters in pursuit of healthy, resilient ecosystems across Scotland’s land and seas for the benefit of people and wildlife. The Trust successfully champions the cause of wildlife through policy and campaigning work, demonstrates best practice through practical conservation and innovative partnerships, and inspires people to take positive action through its education and engagement activities.

The Role:

A key component of the Trust’s work towards achieving a healthy and productive marine environment has been its Living Seas project, of which the Oceans of Value project, funded by the John Ellerman Foundation and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, is a key component. The Oceans of Value project is investigating two different approaches to valuing the marine environment – stakeholder valuation using the Community Voice Method and natural capital valuation – and how these different valuation techniques can assist decision makers.

The Oceans of Value project will focus on the marine environment around the Orkney islands and it is intended that this assessment will provide useful insights for marine planners in Orkney who are in the early stages of developing the Orkney Regional Marine Plan.

The Trust is looking for a Stakeholder Engagement Officer (SEO) to complete the Community Voice Method component of the project. The SEO will be responsible for interviewing stakeholders, developing a short film, running workshops, and writing up a final report. This is a full-time post for a fixed term of 12 months. The post holder will ideally be located in Orkney, but there is some flexibility.

Main Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, engaging with and interviewing key marine stakeholders in Orkney to capture how they value the marine environment.
  • Statistical analysis of interview transcripts.
  • Development of a short, representative film of the interviews.
  • Organising and run a workshop on the film.
  • Producing a final report on how stakeholders in Orkney value the marine environment.

Preferred candidates must have excellent communication, writing, time management and organisation skills, and be confident and comfortable working independently.
