Description

Are you passionate about the marine environment, driven by global impacts, and an expert in measuring climate change impacts at company level?

The MSC has, for 25 years, been a pioneer in incentivising sustainable fisheries management with its certification and ecolabelling program. Fisheries in the MSC program, supported by supply chain and market factors, commit to independent credible verification of sustainable performance and have made thousands of improvements to become, or maintain, compliance with the MSC environmental standards for sustainable fishing.

Yet sustainability goes beyond the environmental impact of fisheries on (amongst others) the target stocks, bycatch, and habitats, and goes beyond the best practice management expected in the MSC program. Climate change has far-reaching impacts in the oceans, and the seafood industry is committed to do its part to mitigate and minimise the impacts of climate change.

Using MSC's globally recognised best practice assurance systems, the climate commitments of the seafood industry and the performance of seafood companies can be credibly and efficiently verified.

MSC is therefore starting a project to explore how to best offer the MSC global system to facilitate seafood companies and seafood supply chain actors in demonstrating compliance with global climate norms and standards in a credible, consistent and efficient manner.

The purpose of this role is to establish a publicly available Green House Gas (GHG) Calculator that (ultimately) enables the user to calculate the production and release of various GHGe (green house gas emissions) within the supply chain of wild capture seafood. This starts with a method to calculate emissions at the fishery level and to offer a verification mechanism – as a bolt-on during assessment against MSC standards. The GHG Calculator and Bolt On must be developed and implemented in such a manner that they will act as recognised public reference points within the industry.

We’re looking for an experienced senior project manager to lead our GHG project. If you’re a science-driven expert, excel in working with stakeholders internally and externally, and want to be part of a team of world-class thought leaders in seafood sustainability, this role may be of interest to you.

To be successful in this role, we’re looking for candidates who:

  • are educated to degree level, preferably PhD, or with equivalent experience within the domain of LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) or GHG calculations, preferably related to seafood supply chains and/or feed.
  • have experience of post-doctoral research
  • have strong project management skills – preferably within multi-disciplined projects.
  • understand certification schemes and environmental offsetting programs.

The role also depends heavily on working effectively with internal and external stakeholders; excellent presentation, communication, and reporting skills are also key.

We offer a professional, high impact, yet flexible working environment, where with colleagues you can help shape the future of the world’s oceans.

Please note: this role can be based at our offices in either London or The Hague and is a fixed-term contract for 3 years.

We’re an international organisation and our employees all demonstrate a level of cultural awareness, and value the diverse views and approaches relevant to the MSC program.

The MSC is committed to flexible working. We are currently running a trial for hybrid working, and the successful candidate will need to work from our London or The Hague office for a minimum of 50% of their working time each month.

If this has inspired you, please apply with your cover letter and CV.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Closing date for application: 14 November 2022 @08:00am (GMT).
