Senior Energy & Climate Analyst - UK

Short summary/strapline

Bring your exceptional data analysis expertise and communication skills to a globally respected energy and climate think tank at a pivotal moment in the decarbonisation of the UK power sector

Description

Ember has a track record of changing policy to accelerate the global transition to clean power. We are now looking for a passionate senior energy and climate analyst to build on the existing strength and impact of Ember’s European team.

The new Senior Energy & Climate Analyst focused on the UK will enhance Ember’s reach and influence and work to ensure that the UK delivers on its clean electricity transition plans. The role includes, in collaboration with Ember’s global teams, enabling lessons learnt in the UK to be shared internationally.

To be successful in this role, you will be an experienced energy and/or climate analyst, with a track record of working to change policy. You will need to have a proven record of producing compelling, data-led analytical outputs and a comprehensive understanding of the UK electricity system and policy landscape.

Background

The UK power sector transition is moving ahead of many other major industrialised nations, with a dramatic transition from reliance on coal and gas to wind, solar and nuclear. With a 2035 clean power commitment from the UK government, and a 2030 target from the opposition, it is a crucial environment for demonstrating how a fully clean power system can work. Ember led the research and advocacy which won these commitments.

As part of the -power transition, 10% of UK electricity now comes from forest biomass, and the UK government has plans to invest in BECCS (biomass with carbon capture and storage) - a decision which will have a major international impact. Ember has already led the international conversation on biomass and BECCS, including highlighting the economic and climate risks in the technology.

Key responsibilities

  • Create and share powerful data stories that reach, inform, influence and challenge UK decision-makers
  • Regularly produce a wide range of data-driven outputs including blogs, briefings, reports, data visualisations and social media content
  • Lead research and analysis on negative emissions - especially biomass with carbon capture and storage - both in the UK, and for other countries considering the technology
  • Produce briefings on lessons from the UK and EU power sector transitions that can help shape the global narrative
  • Deliver presentations, webinars, media interviews and attend key stakeholders meetings
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant energy policy developments and use your expertise to identify impactful intervention opportunities that align with Ember’s strategy
  • Proactively seek out new data sources and analysis techniques that can support climate campaigning in the power sector
  • Work collaboratively across Ember teams and build a wide network of external UK and global partners to share data, ideas, analysis and expertise

Location

UK (remote or London office)

Must have the right to work in the UK

Essential

  • Five+ years of UK electricity, energy and/or climate analysis
  • Comprehensive understanding of the UK power sector and related energy and climate policy
  • Highly numerate with experience analysing and visualising large datasets
  • Ability to understand complex concepts and communicate them with clarity, producing high quality, advocacy-ready analysis through reports and presentations
  • Proven ability to create change and influence decision-makers using data analysis
  • Self-starter with strong organisational skills and effective time management with experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Passionate about the global energy transition
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

Nice to have

  • Experience using analytical packages such as Python, R or similar

We are especially keen to encourage applications from people underrepresented in climate change analysis and campaigning. Climate change is a race issue, a class issue, and a gender issue. We welcome applicants with lived experiences of these issues.
