Mabbett and Associates Ltd (Mabbett), is an independent, integrated environmental, health and safety, energy consulting and engineering firm, and was established in 1996 in Glasgow, Scotland. Since then, the firm has grown to employ 37 motivated engineers, scientists and supporting professionals across the U.K., and over 35% of our staff are now shareholders in the firm. We have regional offices in: Belfast, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Inverness and Liverpool.   Mabbett clients include industrial and commercial companies, developers and planners through to manufacturing, utilities and utilities infrastructure companies. 

Mabbett is seeking to recruit a Senior Ecologist to join our growing team. The position will be based in Inverness, Scotland and may require travel, occasional overnight stays throughout the U.K., and further afield depending on project requirements.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Education

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A BSc or MSc in Ecology/EIA/Environmental Planning or related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body such as CIEEM and/or be Chartered. 

Experience

  • A successful track record of winning and working on ecology and habitat survey project work in Scotland (e.g. bird surveys, bat surveys, water vole, otter, badger and other protected species identification/habitat management plan development, watching brief etc).
  • Commercial expertise and ability to develop scopes of work and budgets for proposals.
  • A thorough and practical understanding of EIA and ecology related legislation such as Habitat Regulations Appraisal (HRA), including best practice guidelines, survey methods, planning processes and environmental assessment methods.
  • An ability to deliver practical solutions taking into account commercial considerations.
  • Experience of working with CEMP/ECoW requirements.
  • Experience of management of CAR licensing.
  • Excellent report writing and client liaison skills.
  • Experience of successfully leading communications with regulators and stakeholders such as landowners, construction companies, SEPA, SNH etc.

  • have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • hold ecology-related survey licences (e.g. bat, great crested newts etc).
  • have strong problem-solving skills.
  • be a ‘self-starter’.
  • be able to support project work with non-standard working hours through seasonal/ dusk and dawn work where required.
  • be proficient in GIS and Microsoft Office Professional software packages.
  • have a full U.K. driving licence and able to drive currently.

Some travel is involved, for which a company pool car is available and for which a valid driving licence will be required.  Occasionally travel by air will be required, for which a valid passport and photo ID is required.
