The Natural and Environmental Research Council (NERC) is a partner organisation within UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). UKRI is a new entitythat brings together nine partnersto create an independent organisation with a strong voice for research and innovation, and a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.
The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of NERC and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere.
Benefits
NERC offer a public-sector pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave and 10½ days’ public and privilege holiday per annum. We offer a flexible and supportive working environment and will encourage your continuing professional development as part of our career support.
About the role
The RA Hydrological Modeller will work in the Hydro-JULES team, which supports and enables collaborative work across the research and academic community to (i) address important science questions in the fields of hydrology, land-atmosphere feedbacks, carbon and nutrient cycles, data science and integration with novel instrumentation and Earth observation technologies; (ii) quantify the risks of hydro-climatic extremes (e.g., floods and drought) in a changing environment to support long-range planning and policy decisions; and (iii) improve hydrological forecasting using new sensors and modelling technology.
Main responsibilities:
- lead the design, development and evaluation of soil moisture and runoff generation modules within the Hydro-JULES programme
- contribute to the development of protocols for testing, evaluating and benchmarking the model and its components, and maintain model documentation
- lead the publication of technical reports and scientific papers in highly-ranked peer-reviewed academic journals
- contribute to the process of community consultation and interactions with researchers, stakeholders and users to ensure that the modelling system designed to take account of foreseeable future design requirements
- develop ideas for new research activity and contribute to proposals for research funding, including externally funded grants and fellowships
- work collaboratively with partner institutes and universities.
About you
You will have a relevant PhD (or MSc with equivalent research experience in hydrology, atmospheric science or land surface science.
You must have a strong track record, commensurate with career stage, of computational modelling in either hydrological, atmospheric or land-surface science with the ability to propose and develop new theoretical approaches and implement them in a high-level scientific programming language.
You should have the ability to work independently to produce high-quality work of the highest standards and to tight deadlines.
You will have an aptitude for and experience of working in interdisciplinary research teams with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to develop effective collaborations and the ability to take a lead role within a team to ensure project delivery, when appropriate.
