Description

We are looking for a technically competent, conscientious and motivated Programme Officer to work in our Climate Change and Biodiversity Programme.  The Programme aims to provide authoritative information to support decision-making at the intersection of climate change and biodiversity conservation policies.  The Programme’s work covers the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, the impacts of climate policy on biodiversity, and the role of ecosystems in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

WCMC attaches great importance to addressing safeguarding and ethical considerations in all activities carried out by its staff, including where partner organisations or individuals are part of the delivery of our work. This includes children and vulnerable adults in the community who may be vulnerable to abuse. WCMC act with integrity, are transparent and expect applicants to share the same values.

This role provides the opportunity to contribute to a portfolio of high-profile projects that support effective decision making on biodiversity and climate change policy, with particular emphasis on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), other mitigation (especially ecosystem restoration), and ecosystem-based adaptation. You will lead on one or more projects, managing inputs from other staff and working alongside leading REDD+ and adaptation experts, economists and GIS technicians to ensure successful delivery of important publications, reports and other information outputs.

You will have experience of working at the science/policy interface in the field of climate change or biodiversity. Your work with public- or private-sector decision makers will have included developing science-based information and materials. You will have a relevant post-graduate degree and good understanding of the intersection between climate change and biodiversity conservation issues.  You will have worked in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean or Asia - Pacific regions.  An ability to work in French or Spanish would be an advantage.

We will provide you with the challenge of working on high profile conservation projects, where your work really makes a difference to the field of conservation in an area aligned to our strategic aims and broader global initiatives. In addition to training and development opportunities, we offer a competitive salary and benefits package, including generous pension contributions.

WCMC is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all staff and job applicants. We aim to create a supportive and inclusive working environment in which all individuals are able to make best use of their skills, free from discrimination or harassment, and in which all decisions are based on merit. We do not discriminate against staff on the basis of age; race; sex; disability; gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity; religion; faith or belief.

If you are looking for a rewarding and challenging post within a group of like-minded people working at the science-policy interface and have the necessary skills and experience, we want to hear from you. Please complete our application form, personal details form and send it together with your CV and a short covering letter through the link on our website at below by 30th June 2021. Remote interviews will be held between 12-23 July 2021. Please note that this is a position with WCMC the UK-registered charity, and is not a position working for the United Nations. It is a UK based role and the successful applicant will be expected to reside within commuting distance of Cambridge and within the UK. Some of our roles are eligible for visa sponsorship, providing the relevant sponsorship criteria are met.
