Overview

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile

ZSL are seeking an experienced, innovative and adaptable individual to oversee ZSL’s Africa Conservation Programme. Reporting the the Senior Programme Manager, Africa, this position will manage a team of staff based in the UK and overseas to ensure the effective operations of ZSL’s overseas programmes in Africa and delivery of ZSL’s strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the production of strategies for programme development and grant writing.
  • Oversee programme, staff management and administration.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with collaborators, stakeholders and donors.
  • Liaise with the programme teams to coordinate cross-Society programme activities.
  • Support the external representation and promotion of ZSL and its conservation work.

Person Specification

This is a management level position which requires proven experience in the delivery and development of conservation programmes. The successful applicant will have a track record of strategic programme development, securing and managing funds from a range of funding sources and experience of developing and managing relationships with partners and donors. Candidates should also have:

  • An excellent standard of written and spoken English. French is highly desirable.
  • Proven people management, coaching and capacity building/development skills.
  • Strong skills in project planning, financing, management, implementation, and evaluation.
  • A good knowledge and understanding of current international and Africa specific biodiversity conservation issues.
  • Excellent understanding and experience in developing partnerships, fund-raising, donor strategies, functions, governmental and international relations.
  • Experience working in the region is desirable. 

Please Note: The position will be based at ZSL’s offices in London and will involve travel to the relevant countries.
