Applications are invited for a four-month post-doctoral Research Officer post in the School of Ocean Sciences to work on the NERC funded Marine Ecosystems Research Programme (MERP). 

The successful candidate will be educated to PhD level (or near completion)  in marine biology or ecology and will be a numerate biologist with experience in cetacean and seabird ecology and work on risk and diet analysis for European cetaceans and seabirds.

The post-doctoral Research Officer will work under the guidance of Dr J J Waggitt, Professor J G Hiddink and Dr P G H Evans.

The envisaged start date for this post is August 2018.

Overview

The School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) is a multidisciplinary department with a focus on continental shelf sciences. Core research interests include physical oceanography, marine biology and ecology, biogeochemistry and climate change science.

The Project

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) / Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) - funded Marine Ecosystems Research Programme set out to integrate existing marine data and target new data with current models and knowledge of marine ecosystem services, in order to improve our understanding of the whole UK marine ecosystem (www.marine-ecosystems.org.uk).

Purpose of the Job

The successful candidate will be a numerate biologist with experience in cetacean and seabird ecology and work on risk and diet analysis for European cetaceans and seabirds. They will be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently and to deliver a range of high quality scientific outputs that include peer reviewed scientific papers. The successful candidate will have experience of using advanced analytical skills (for example GAMM’s, GLMM’s, GEE’s, multivariate statistical methods) and handling large datasets in R and GIS.

The successful candidate will use existing analytical outputs and data collations in additional analyses. In particular:
• Seasonal risk and sensitivity analyses for European species.
• Analyses of dietary data, in particular relating spatial-temporal variations in prey composition to stock assessments and environmental conditions.

• Publication of science output in the peer reviewed literature.
• To maintain collaborations with the partners in the consortium
• Will implement an agreed programme of work and research in consultation with Professor J G Hiddink, Dr P G H Evans and Dr J J Waggitt.

• The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Educated to PhD level in marine biology or ecology.
• Demonstrably numerate and able to handle large data sets using a wide range of analytical software including R and GIS.
• Demonstrable ability to produce scientific papers and reports to deadlines
• A record of publication in the scientific literature in cetacean and/or seabird ecology that demonstrates a high quality and quantity of output for a given period of active research.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of partners in different settings.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the bilingual nature of the institution and area and the ensuing responsibilities.

Desirable:

• Knowledge and understanding of datasets of cetacean and seabird distribution from UK seas.
• Experience in surveying cetaceans and seabirds at sea.
