Job description
Do you want to be involved in guiding the future of peatland restoration across Scotland’s forests and land?
We’re looking for an experienced ecologist to join our national team of technical specialists. You will play a key role in advising our Regional teams to protect designated and priority habitat and restore degraded peatlands through our Land Management Planning process. You will lead on guidance and training to upskill staff and support their decision-making.
This role is the National Office technical lead for contributing to regional casework involving peatlands priority habitats and designated peatland features. You will refer to and support the various Scottish Government policies relating to forestry, biodiversity and climate change.
You will also lead on providing advice on the capacity of peatlands to support afforested peatlands, within wider challenges such as taking action against climate change and adaptation.
You will develop a ‘no-net loss of biodiversity’ approach to management associated with these areas, and work closely with the wider business to encourage protection of our peatland habitats for biodiversity gain, or their restoration where this delivers against the Scottish Government climate change plan. You will be expected to liaise with regional teams to provide specialist ecological support and technical advice to inform the revision of Land Management Plans (LMPs) with significant peatland habitats, and Land Transactions through input into the revision of LMPs as part of Regional programmes.
You will work as part of a national team of ecologists and technical specialists that provide specialist advice and support to regional staff on a number of project areas each year. Working with the wider regional team of peatland restoration foresters, and national team of specialists, you will advise on site restoration plans and support the procurement and management of national contracts. Training will be provided, both formally and through learning from experienced colleagues and interaction with other organizations.
