Description  

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is an executive agency of Scottish Government. We manage land on behalf of Scottish Ministers and serve as part of the Environment and Forestry directorate of the Scottish Government.

In this role you will work within the National Environment Team who lead, manage, and advise on key aspects of our environmental conservation, protection and enhancement work across the country.

Job description

This post is an exciting opportunity to lead FLS’s programme of peatland habitat restoration to maximise its emissions reduction and biodiversity benefits and contribute to tackling the global climate emergency through helping make Scotland a net-zero emissions country by 2045.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and manage peatland restoration activities on Scotland’s Forests & Land in conjunction with FLS regional management teams and support the Environment Manager and Director Land Management in the delivery of corporate objectives and targets.
  • Implement a long-term Peatland Restoration Strategy for Scotland’s forests and land informed by expert specialists including the FLS Open Habitat Ecologist.
  • Oversee FLS’s expanding peatland restoration work programme and budget, lead national Peatland Team meetings and work with customers and stakeholders to secure ongoing funding from Scottish Government (SG), commercial and other sources.
  • Ensure project performance is monitored & reported in line with Scottish Government and NatureScot requirements. Promote a safety-first culture and a diligent approach to contract management.
  • Guide the FLS national and regional planning, environment and delivery teams, providing strategic direction and practical support. Co-ordinate the provision of technical information and the development of clear guidance and operating procedures.
  • Lead in representing and communicating the FLS Peatland Project to colleagues, stakeholders and the wider public. Adopt a collaborative and proactive approach to developing stakeholder relationships, especially with key partners.
  • Take an innovative approach, and actively seek out opportunities for yourself and others to develop their knowledge and understanding and share experience of alternative restoration techniques.
