Based: Bath or London with regular travel to Liberia (between 4 and 6 times per year) and need for travel to other locations
Tenure: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £30,000 - £38,000 depending upon experience and location

Position overview

EJF’s Oceans Campaign protects the marine environment, its biodiversity and the livelihoods dependent upon it. In West Africa, EJF is working to eradicate illegal fishing, build support for community-led sustainable fisheries, and protect threatened habitats and marine species with special focus on sharks, rays and turtles.

The role will involve: desk and field research; project, staff and budget management; advocacy, public outreach and media engagement in West Africa and the EU. The role will work at the grassroots to bring essential information and evidence on illegal fishing and threats to marine biodiversity to national and international attention.

Key responsibilities:

  • Mentor and manage the EJF team in Liberia, monitoring progress against KPIs and agreed budgets and outcomes.
  • Build the capacity and scope of EJF’s Fisheries Information Network, gathering and sharing information on illegal fishing and marine wildlife conservation.
  • Research and produce reports and briefings, and other communications materials, including for digital and traditional media.
  • Represent EJF in external events including with EU Commission and national governments, with donors and supporters.
  • Undertake field research in West Africa, gathering evidence, film and photos, with a particular focus on Liberia.

You are the right candidate if you:

  • Are educated to degree-level in a relevant discipline.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years relevant professional experience.
  • Are great communicator, able to present research and investigative findings to multiple audiences, including government, industry, media, the public and donors.
  • Are a proven people and project manager able to motivate and mentor to get the best from EJF’s Liberia team.
  • Have great negotiation skills, are diplomatic and tactful even under pressure.
  • Have experience working in remote and challenging areas, where your tenacity, resilience and problem-solving skills have helped secure positive outcomes.
  • Work well independently, you’re a team-player who applies your skills for the greater good.
  • Know that change is hard to win, but worth winning.

You may also have:

  • Experience of journalism/published writing or film-making/photography.
  • Proficiency in other European languages (French, Spanish, German).
