For millennia, people have been hunting wildlife for food. But today, due to population increase and a growing demand for meat, overhunting for wild meat is threatening hundreds of wildlife species with extinction. When forests and grasslands are empty of wildlife and the rivers, lakes and coastal reefs have will be emptied of fish, not only irreplaceable biodiversity will be lost, but indigenous and traditional people will have lost a vital source nutrition, income and cultural identity.
The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme is developing innovative solutions based on field projects in thirteen countries. It is a seven-year (2018-2024) African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) initiative, which is being funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment. It is being implemented by a dynamic consortium of four partners with expertise in wildlife conservation and food security. In Madagascar, the Sustainable Wildlife Management Programme is implemented in and around Makira Natural Park, the largest national park in the country. It aims at improving the management of hunting and fishing, increasing poultry and fish production, and encouraging the consumption of domestic meat, to ensure the sustainability of natural resources and the livelihoods of the rural populations living in Makira.
WCS is currently looking for a motivated candidate to manage the SWM Madagascar project.
