About Us

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s purpose is to inspire, inform and empower people to stop wild animals from going extinct. With a new strategy about to launch in June 2018, ZSL is just about to embark on a transformational change programme which will see strategic objectives being set for our 200 year anniversary in 2026.

Role Profile

ZSL is looking to recruit an Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) Co-ordinator to support our programme of work on IWT in the lead up to and around the October London conference. Reporting to the Programme Manager, Africa a significant part of the role will be supporting the Societies preparations for the conference, including the planning and delivery of events.

 

The post will also contribute to all aspects of IWT activities including liaising with partners, logistical and administrative aspects of event planning, financial management, writing of relevant materials and reports, contribute to policy and programme development and relevant communications. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • The post holder will provide administrative support to the programme, including but not restricted to: preparation of monthly programme summary reports; keeping the ZSL Projects Database up to date; sourcing, procuring and inventorying equipment and materials; preparing and reviewing MoUs, contracts and agreements; arranging travel requirements.
  • The post holder will provide financial support to the programme, including but not restricted to: the checking of receipts against expenses, checking expense allocations to grants, monitoring of spend and reconciling expenditure.
  • The post holder supports the programme management team, and other programme staff in tracking project activities to ensure that deliverables are achieved according to the grant contract, work-plan and budget.
  • The post holder will liaise on a regular basis with programme staff to coordinate on and assist with the delivery of tasks.

Person Specification

Ideally the successful candidate will have:

  • A higher degree in a relevant subject such as Natural Resources policy, biology, forestry, conservation, management, economics, or Bachelor degree (with equivalent experience) in biology or forest conservation or equivalent work experience.
  • Prior experience of technical and financial report writing.
  • Sound financial management experience.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with teams.
  • Ability to communicate in another language e.g. French, Swahili, Portuguese is desirable.
  • A good understanding of current international and Africa specific biodiversity conservation issues.
  • Demonstrable experience of contributing to fundraising proposals is desirable.
  • Previous experience of working in developing countries is desirable.
  • Prior experience in coordinating conservation or development projects is desirable.

Please note: The position is a full-time, 5 months fixed-term contract based at ZSL main offices in Regents Park. The position is available to start immediately.
