The Marine Stewardship Council is seeking a motivated, talented Fisheries Assessment Manager

Who are we?

The MSC’s vision is for the world’s oceans to be teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations.  Through our internationally recognised certification and ecolabeling programme well-managed sustainable fisheries are recognised and rewarded in the marketplace, through the leadership of our partners.  Critically, other fisheries are incentivised to improve their performance to meet the growing demand for certified sustainable and traceable seafood choice.   Over 400 fisheries around the world, representing 16% of the annual global marine catch, are now engaged in the MSC programme and over 1200 documented improvements to the way our oceans are being fished have been recorded. MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 100 countries.

The MSC is looking for a Fisheries Assessment Manager (FAM) who will play an important role in helping to deliver our mission. Do you have expertise in well-managed and sustainable fisheries? Can you oversee and manage a portfolio of MSC certified fisheries, ensuring that assessments are robust? Are you willing to you work with colleagues, experts and stakeholders to develop and improve the MSC Fisheries Standard?

As one of a team of FAMs, you will oversee a portfolio of fisheries that are under third party assessment by external Conformity Assessment Bodies to ensure the MSC Fisheries Standard is applied effectively and that the processes that govern fishery assessments are followed.

You will also have responsibility for developing and implementing key elements of the MSC Fisheries Standard, ensuring that the MSC’s requirements for well-managed and sustainable fisheries are sound and aligned with best practice.

Who are You?

You’ll have:

  • a postgraduate degree, or equivalent professional experience, in marine ecology, fisheries science and management, or another closely related subject
  • expert knowledge of stock assessment; fisheries harvest strategies and management tools and/or fisheries monitoring, and information are highly desirable
  • knowledge or experience of third-party certification schemes, including the MSC programme
  • a strong knowledge base in fisheries science and management and are a versatile, quick learner
  • experience working with stakeholders and other external parties, preferably in fisheries management, science or fisheries policy development settings on a range of fisheries and resource sustainability issues
