We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Ecologists to join the Environment and Ecology Team which is responsible for managing the city’s natural environment and encouraging people to visit and enjoy the outdoors.
Southampton City Council has recently launched its Green City Charter and requires an additional ecologist to help deliver a wide ranging programme of projects, strategies and surveys designed to help protect and enhance Southampton’s biodiversity.
You will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with the provision of a comprehensive and professional ecological advisory service to all sections of the Council and externally.
  • Delivering actions in the Natural Environment section of the Green City Plan.
  • Developing a city wide ecological monitoring scheme
  • Developing and implementing a city-wide biodiversity improvement programme.
  • Developing partnerships with external bodies and the local business community to deliver biodiversity projects across Southampton.
  • Supporting the development and review of plans, policies, strategies and projects which promote natural capital / ecosystem services and blue and green infrastructure approaches at the local level.

To be successful in the role you will have a profession qualification at Level 6 (Degree) or be able to demonstrate the ability and commitment to work to this level and undertake an appropriate relevant qualification.

You will also require excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and be a good team player able to work effectively with other staff, contractors and members of the public. You should have in depth knowledge of lowland habitats and species and ideally some experience of urban ecology. You will have excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, and be able to work on your own initiative managing and prioritising your own workload.

This is a 37 hour per week, 3 year fixed term, contract which falls within Grade 9 of Southampton City Council’s pay scales. This will equate to an annual salary of £34,728 – £38,890.

You will be based at the Civic Centre, Southampton, which has excellent transport links to all of the surrounding area of Hampshire and beyond. Vehicles are provided for working around the city.

You will be a member of the Environment and Ecology Team which is responsible for promoting the enjoyment and understanding of Southampton’s open spaces and encouraging the community to visit and enjoy the parks and their wildlife. It undertakes conservation management works on natural green spaces across the city and also develops opportunities for groups and individuals to be actively involved in caring for their local parks.
