Lang Tengah Turtle Watch is looking for a friendly, adventurous, environmentally-conscious couple (or passionate ‘solo soul’) to come and live at and manage our private property on Pulau Perhentian Besar, Malaysia and maintain our 5*, AirBnB Superhost record.
Take a look at the property here: http://www.langtengahturtlewatch.org/perhentian-house/
and our guests’ reviews here: https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/12310498?s=_yfVTf9J
We are looking for the successful candidate to come to manage the house starting from early March 2021 to help set up the house for the season. The position would then go until the closing of The Resthouse for the monsoon at the end of October 2021. This is a paid opportunity, and for more information about perks and salary please contact us.
The Resthouse
A wooden house, by the sea; entirely on its own, on a promontory - hidden in amongst the trees..
Hayati, the Lang Tengah Turtle Watch Founder, moved this house from where it was originally: near Ipoh, on the West Coast of Malaysia, 250 km away.
It was built by the British Government, between the wars - has not been altered, and is furnished according to the period. However, in-keeping with our sustainable and environmentally-friendly ethos, the house is entirely solar powered.
The Island
Pulau Perhentian Besar is a popular family and couple’s destination, located about 30 minutes by speedboat off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is less of a backpacker-scene than the neighbouring small island (Pulau Perhentian Kecil) but both are known for their scuba diving on beautiful reefs with crystal clear, azure seas and stunning seascapes.
It is possible to trek through the jungles on the island, which has no roads. At The Resthouse, Dusky-Leaf Monkeys and Colugos (‘Flying Lemurs’) are common visitors but the jungles have much more to offer.
There are many dive centres and hostels on both Perhentian islands that hire seasonally. All of which are either accessible by walking or water taxi.
A quick 5-minute boat ride from The Resthouse gets you to the nearby village, where fresh fruit and vegetables can be easily purchased.
You will get multiple opportunities to visit our Turtle Conservation project on the neighbouring island of Lang Tengah where our young, enthusiastic and dynamic team of conservationists work to project the nesting population of sea turtles and undertake other research projects.
Staff and interns from this project will also periodically come and take their breaks at The Resthouse. Nearly all proceeds from the rental of the house go to funding our conservation projects.
The Coffee Cart
In 2019 we began a successful venture managing a small coffee cart at one of the local cafes. Managed by a barista and outreach barista, this allowed us to raise funds for our conservation project while also expanding our conservation impact in the area through increased outreach. We hope to continue this venture in 2020, and although the Resthouse Manager needn’t be directly involved in the daily running of the coffee cart, they will need to oversee operations and accounting.
Your Role
- Manage guest bookings on Air BnB
- Co-ordinate the arrival of and welcome guests, ensuring that their needs are met
- Help guests in arranging adventure activities
- Ensure that the house is kept clean and tidy
- Turnover of bedding and towels in between guests
- Oversee work done by our cleaner and gardener
- Maintain the property
- Communicate with LTTW Headquarters when required
- Restock house with supplies from trips to the mainland when required
- Basic bookkeeping and accounting
- Overseeing the coffee cart, and managing the accounting & supplies
Requirements
Between them, the ideal couple (or individual) will have:
•Experience in the hospitality industry
•Experience in managing a property
•Excellent social-skills for engaging with guests
•Be keen environmentalists and acquainted with the field of wildlife conservation
•An eye for detail and an appreciation/understanding for the concept of The Resthouse
•Be keen to bring fresh ideas, to keep refining the experience we offer at The Resthouse
We are looking for a couple (or an individual comfortable with living and working on their own) where one, or both, partner(s) can have a different occupation on the island, as The Resthouse only needs one person to manage it on a daily basis, and so LTTW can only cover the salary of one individual. There is scope for one partner to manage the house, whilst the other takes on another occupation (at the dive centres, massage outlets, hostels or other). Otherwise, both partners can have different occupations and alternate in managing the house. Accommodation is provided in an annex to the main house, with its own private patio area.
For more information, or if you are keen to apply for the role, please send an email with your C.V. and cover letter to yen@langtengahturtlewatch.org
We are looking forward to hearing from you.
