This post will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to apply their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) technical knowledge and skills on a wide range of Defence projects. Projects including the introduction of new military equipment (recent e.g. F35 Lightning, Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers and Ajax fighting vehicles); new and replacement military infrastructure and accommodation projects UK wide and overseas (recent e.g. include reconstruction of a naval oil fuel depot, works to docks and piers, garrison redevelopment and disposal projects, solar farm developments).
The Environmental Planning Team (EPT), part of the Environmental Management and Assessment (EMA) Team which is part of DIO Technical Services. DIO Technical Services includes a wide range of technical specialisms providing technical advice and support to the maintenance and development of the MOD estate in the UK and overseas.
The role will involve: Management of Environmental Planners, collaboration with internal stakeholders and customersonsultancies, contractors and DIO/MOD subject matter experts. Engagement with other government departments, agencies and local planning authorities may also be required.
This is a varied role working across the diverse MOD estate, with duties and responsibilities changing as MOD/DIO requirements emerge, change and progress.
The Senior Environmental Planner will report to the head for EMA. They will lead the team and foster a collaborative and supportive environment to deliver MOD/DIO requirements whilst providing mutual support to EPT and wider EMA team members to manage workloads, discuss issues, share knowledge and experience.
Tasks will fall into 5 broad categories: Team management and business reporting, subject matter expert advice, assurance, procurement and policy/guidance development. The proportion of time required to be spent in each category will depend on the progress of MOD initiatives, requirements and priorities.
Team Management and Business Reporting:
The Senior Environmental Planner will lead and support the EPT in delivering MOD/DIO requirements and manage performance of the team. At full strength EPT currently has four Environmental Planner roles to deal with peaks and troughs in team/individual workloads and address project requirements.
Subject Matter Expert Advice:
At a project level, provide environmental and sustainability technical advice and support, focusing on EIA and other related environmental and consenting matters.
At a plan/programme level, provide high level environmental and sustainability advice and support for example on Strategic Environmental Assessment and Sustainability Appraisal.
Assurance:
Co-ordinating the technical review, assurance and submission of EIA documentation, focusing on high quality EIA screening requests on behalf of the Secretary of State for Defence.
Procurement:
When required, assist with the procurement and management of consultancy services, including developing the scope of works and providing tender assurance.
Policy/Guidance Development:
When required, contribute to the review and drafting of MOD/DIO related policy and guidance documents.
Travel Requirements:
Travel to offices, in-person team meetings, site visits within the UK. Very occasionally overseas travel may be required
