Summary

The Chief Scientist post is critical to the effective, efficient and resilient delivery of our mission.

The Chief Scientist will provide exceptional scientific leadership and quality assurance for JNCC, proactively connecting us with the external research community maintaining our Public Sector Research Establishment status and supporting the professional development and empowerment of our scientists.

Job description

The Chief Scientist will be an authentic, visible and strategic leader, ensuring the scientific rigour of our work, able to articulate clearly JNCC’s vision our mission, strategic priorities and values through your work and actions, and be inspiring about our work and its future.

As a member of JNCC’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the Chief Scientist will lead the organisation, collectively and efficiently, through the change needed to deliver JNCC’s vision, being confident in their engagement with staff and stakeholders.

The Chief Scientist will be a high profile and influential advocate for JNCC externally and promote JNCC’s reputation for robust scientific advice. The Chief Scientist will advise the JNCC Chair and Joint Committee and deputise for the Chief Executive as required.

The Chief Scientist will foster an environment where everyone feels valued and respected by creating a more inclusive workplace, where every individual has equality of opportunity to progress and thrive. The Chief Scientist will support JNCC’s ambition to continue to develop as a learning organisation.

The Chief Scientist will build a new directorate, drawing in teams from across the organisation. The Chief Scientist will be responsible and accountable for the people and budget allocated by the CEO. The Chief Scientist will manage Grant in Aid funding and forecasts for income to deliver the relevant outcomes in the Business Plan.

Responsibilities

As a science-based organisation, JNCC can only function effectively if it has scientific credibility.

The Chief Scientist will:

  • Lead JNCC’s science, evidence and advice functions, ensuring that JNCC’s work is underpinned by high quality science and evidence.
  • Create a new directorate and manage cross cutting evidence, data, analysis and advice teams.
  • Be the Head of Profession for JNCC in the Government Science and Engineering profession (GSE) or related Government evidence professions.
  • Maintain and build productive partnerships with universities and research institutes, in the UK and internationally.
  • Maintain JNCC’s Public Sector Research Establishment (PSRE) status, using it to support UK
  • Research Institute (UKRI) funding applications as lead and partner.
  • Support the CEO on making best use of the experience and capabilities within the organisation and work with our partners to support the delivery of JNCC’s nature commitments and ambitions.
  • Lead JNCC’s participation in the Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies’ Chief Scientists’ Group.
  • Lead on specific science issues, as they arise.
  • Develop and lead science Continuing Professional Development programme across JNCC.

Person specification

To be a successful candidate you will have:

  • Extensive experience of science leadership in any natural or social scientific discipline, and a good understanding of the UK’s domestic and international priorities as they affect the twin global crises of ecological collapse and climate breakdown.
  • An excellent track record in scientific publication and wider communication, and demonstrable application of evidence and analysis to decision making.
  • Extensive experience in leading interdisciplinary teams from across the natural and social sciences, including economics, and an ability to apply our evidence and advice to the range of environmental, economic and social values at stake from ecological collapse and climate breakdown.
  • Extensive experience of working with delivery partners and working effectively across system boundaries to achieve outcomes.
  • Confidence and credibility in engaging at a senior level with Ministers, scientists, policy makers and advisers to secure mutually beneficial outcomes and deliver our mission for nature.

Pension

Shortlisting for interview is on the basis of merit. The selection panel will assess the evidence presented by all applicants against the advertised criteria and the highest rated applicants will be invited to interview. In the event that we receive a large volume of applications we will conduct the sift based on the lead behaviour of Leadership.
