CEO Position - The Institute of Fisheries Management

Introduction : The Institute of Fisheries Management Ltd (IFM) is seeking a dynamic and visionary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead our organization into the future. IFM is dedicated to the advancement of sustainable fisheries management and advocating for the preservation of aquatic ecosystems that support these. As CEO, you will play a crucial role in shaping our strategy, enhancing our impact here in the UK and internationally, and ensuring the sustainability of fish and fisheries for future generations.

Position: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Location: Flexible. The position will be home/remote based. Reasonably frequent travel, primarily domestic, is required as part of the role.

Hours: 16hrs/week. (2 days per week). Whilst there is a degree of flexibility as to how the working hours are structured each week, there is a requirement for some flexibility from both parties in order to ensure the maximum effectiveness of the role.

Responsible to : IFM’s Board of Directors but will report to its Chair or as required other nominated Trustees

Direct Reports : Chief Operations Officer, Development and Membership Officer, Training Co-Ordinator,

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership: Help develop and implement a cutting-edge strategy that positions IFM as an international leader and voice in fisheries management. Lead the organization through periods of change with an innovative approach, ensuring that IFM remains at the forefront of industry developments and environmental sustainability whilst up-skilling and championing the views of its members.

Advocacy and Influence: Serve as the primary spokesperson for the IFM, engaging with the membership, key stakeholders including Governments, NGOs, industry leaders, and the media to advocate for policies and practices that promote sustainable fisheries management.

Organizational Management: Oversee the organization’s operations, finances, and personnel, ensuring that IFM operates efficiently and effectively. Lead a diverse team of professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and professional growth.

Fundraising and Financial Sustainability: Secure funding from a variety of sources, including from the membership, training courses, conferences, government grants, private donations, and corporate partnerships. Ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organisation through prudent fiscal management and efficient use of financial software and Human Resources.

 

Partnership and Relationship Building: Ensure smooth working between the Board and the Executive and with the Advisory Council. Cultivate and maintain strategic partnerships with other organizations and stakeholders in the fisheries and environmental sectors. Leverage these relationships to amplify IFM's impact and reach.

Policy Development and Research: Oversee the development and dissemination of policy recommendations and cutting-edge research aimed at advancing sustainable fisheries management. Ensure that IFM's work is grounded in the latest science/evidence and reflects the needs of diverse stakeholders.

Communications and Outreach: Lead and improve the organization’s communications strategy, enhancing IFM's visibility and influence through various channels. Engage with the membership, public and stakeholders to raise awareness about the importance of fish and sustainable fisheries management.

Requirements:

A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in the nonprofit, or environmental, fisheries management, or related sectors.

A deep commitment to the mission of sustainable fisheries management and environmental conservation.

An in-depth understanding of small business and NGO governance and the ability to develop and foster a strong working relationship with the Board of Directors and in particular the Chairperson.

Demonstrated success in developing and implementing strategic plans that have achieved significant impact.

Proven ability to lead and inspire a diverse team in a dynamic and changing environment.

Very strong financial acumen and experience of basic financial reporting and managing cash flow in

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence a wide range of stakeholders.

A relevant degree is desirable

Our Offer : Equivalent of circa £50k/per annum (Full-time pro-rata). + a 9% employer pension contribution +approved expenses. The job is offered on an initial 2-year contract with a 6 month probationary period.
