Betts Ecology are pleased to be able to offer the position of Bat & Protected Species Ecologist within our team. A small family business with forty years of experience, we are looking for a friendly and enthusiastic person who enjoys variable work. We are specifically looking for someone with a level one (or above) bat survey licence for this role, with a view to providing support and training to enhance your current skills as you build your career with us.
Job Title: Bat & Protected Species Ecologist
Status: Full-time, permanent
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week but flexibility is required during busy periods. The Office opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Collective agreements may be applied, see Contract of Employment for details.
Remuneration: Up to £33,000 depending on experience
Based at: Bank House, Martley, Worcestershire WR6 6PB.
A surveying ecologist may, at times, be expected to work away from home on contracts, in other parts of the UK.
Reporting to: Technical & Operations Director
Main Duties: Undertaking ecological surveys, report writing, ecological habitat management works and the full range of operations associated with biodiversity projects and ecological consultancy.
Key functions
1) Survey work (50%)
- To undertake ecological surveying to agreed levels across a range of habitats.
- To write and implement Biodiversity Management Plans for estate management.
- To undertake habitat management works.
- To undertake protected species survey and mitigation works under licence.
- To carry out desk studies, data analyses, casework and research.
- To complete the Company written log when removing from Company premises any Betts Ecology equipment.
- To uphold the Company “buddy system” when moving on and off site, on every occasion.
- To take all reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others and comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate, especially with regard to ecological fieldwork.
2) Communication (25%)
- To communicate, and effectively to deal with, clients, colleagues and statutory and non-statutory organisations.
- To provide verbal and written advice to clients on a range of key wildlife and planning issues.
- To write concise and accurate scientific reports and method statements.
- To appreciate your status as sales ambassador for the company and to make the Commercial Land Manager aware of future possible potential work: i.e. pursue ‘recommendations’ in reports and alert Commercial Land Manager to opportunities from clients.
- To update the company project systems regularly and accurately.
3) Project management (15%)
- To maintain accurate and up to date computer records on all projects on the company systems.
- To maintain accurate, up to date and specific timesheet entries for all relevant contracts on the company systems.
- To maintain accurate and up to date entries in the Eco Diary.
- To recognise and analyse problems and identify solutions within agreed time limits.
- To understand and to keep within the constraints of project budgets and time-keeping schedules.
- To liaise with Accounts and the Sales Department in relation to projects that may run/are running over budget in a timely manner.
- To support the Company in achieving project aims.
- To record and follow up recommendations for further work with the Sales and Operations Teams.
4) Knowledge and Skills (10%)
To maintain and further to develop specialist knowledge and skills capability. In particular:
- Botanical surveying skills, particularly relating to bryophytes and lichens and to the National Vegetation Classification standard.
- Recognition of protected British wildlife, and the associated signs and habitats. To have a good knowledge and understanding of national and international nature conservation, planning legislation, policies, best practice guidance and administration and its relationship to compliance and enforcement in the field.
- To hold relevant protected species licences as required to carry out your duties.
Standard Requirements
Essential: Applicants must hold a Natural England level 1 bat surveying licence
In all instances the job-holder will be expected:
- To carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job; and;
- To become familiar with and maintain company standards and procedures.

Pay: £26,000.00-£33,000.00 per year
Schedule:
- 9am-5pm Monday to Friday, with flexible working around relevant protected species survey requirements.
