Description

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has an immediate opening for a highly committed, self-motivated person to join us as a full-time Associate Researcher in the Marine Program. This position will support research to identify, refine, and promote policies to reduce the environmental impacts of international maritime shipping. A key short-term focus will be to help develop an institutional framework for an industry-funded research and development campaign to decarbonize international shipping. This work will directly inform efforts to implement the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Initial GHG strategy, as well as policymaking by national governments investing in low- and zero-carbon ships, fuels, and port-side equipment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Modeling the climate and air quality impacts of the global maritime shipping sector using both bottom-up (activity-based) and top-down (fuel sales-based) approaches in Excel, Python, R, or other environments
  • Advising the international shipping industry and associated stakeholders on how to structure an institution to raise and disburse funds to accelerate research, development, and deployment of zero emission vessels (ZEVs) and their fuels
  • Contributing to policy analyses that estimate the emissions reduction potentials of policy alternatives for the global shipping sector
  • Synthesizing technical information into policy-relevant documents and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences, including research on short-term measures to reduce GHGs from the international shipping sector to be submitted to IMO’s 6th Intersessional Meeting on Greenhouse Gas Emissions (October 2019)
  • Helping refine the ICCT’s Systematic Assessment of Vessel Emissions (SAVE) model, which we use to produce global maritime shipping emissions inventories
  • Engaging with external stakeholders including government officials, NGOs, academics, and industry to build trust and partnerships as the ICCT’s Marine Team representative in Europe
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, energy and resources, or a transportation-related field or other relevant subject, or a Bachelor’s degree plus two to three years of related experience
  • Significant modeling experience (e.g. emissions, air quality, fate and transport, energy use, health impacts of air pollution, etc.) along with the ability to manage and analyze large datasets
  • Superior English written and verbal communications skills, plus excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent quantitative, analytical, and research skills combined with strategic problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills
  • Superior proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with efficiency technologies and emissions controls for other modes is desirable
  • An understanding of transportation systems, the IMO, and/or environmental policy is preferred
  • Proficiency in German (written and spoken) is preferred
  • Ability to travel internationally within Europe is required
