Job description
We are looking for a Forest Planner with excellent communication skills to turn our vision for landscape scale habitat restoration in the Angus Glens into a clear and concise plan.
This post will create a new Land Management Plan for the recently acquired Glen Prosen Estate, as well as fully reviewing plans for our existing forests in Glen Prosen and Glen Doll. Candidates will demonstrate an ability to work with a range of stakeholders and colleagues, engaging them into this process to ensure a collaborative approach and a final plan that delivers against the twin crises of biodiversity and climate.

About the team
The FLS team in East Region manages approximately 90,000Ha of Scotland’s National Forests and
Land, from the coastal pine woods of Moray and Fife, to the large productive forests across
Aberdeenshire, the busy recreational woods near Aberdeen, Dundee and Perth, and the iconic
forests of Bennachie and Tay Forest Park. These areas also include large parts of the Cairngorms
National Park and encompass important open habitats and native woodlands, including sand dune
and shingle systems, blanket bog and montane habitats, the pinewoods of Deeside, lowland oak
woods and the Blackwood of Rannoch Caledonian Pinewood.
The planning and environment teams work closely with other teams and specialists to design
sustainable forests of the future, protect and restore semi-natural habitats, respond to climate
change and enhance our landscapes. The teams prepare spatial plans, develop work programmes
and coordinate and manage data and surveys, as well as contribute to national initiatives and
projects to ensure the public land is well cared for.
Main Duties
- Prepare Land Management Plans (LMPs). This involves getting to know the forest and land
then analysing the implications of forestry, environmental, financial and social impacts and
opportunities to inform proposals for future management. Plans are required to meet the UK.
- Forestry Standard and the UK Woodland Assurance Standard.
- Undertake site visits and collaborate with relevant colleagues to identify forest management requirements, creatively address wider land management problems and
explore options for sustainable land management.
- Build and maintain excellent working relationships with external stakeholders such as
community groups and statutory consultees.
- When necessary, prepare screening information for Environmental Impact Assessments
(EIAs); make amendments to existing plans; and support the planning team as necessary, for
example by coordinating work on pests and diseases, coordinating survey work or supporting
data analysis.
- As a member of the planning team, you may also be expected to manage contracts, such as
for survey work carried out on the forests and land.
