AECOM is looking for 15 Field Ecologists with varied levels of experience to complete fixed term contracts either on a full time or part time basis. Our ecology opportunities have evolved due to an increase in workload and project wins. Job Responsibilities:
The successful candidates will work within a multi-disciplinary team on field surveys in the Midlands including surveys for bats, badger, reptiles, great crested newts, barn owl and other Schedule 1 birds and habitats including National Vegetation Classification.
The fieldwork is likely to require working away from home and some working at night may be required when undertaking surveys. Good organisation and planning skills are necessary to support a team which works safely and to a high technical standard. The candidate will also have good verbal and written communication skills in order to describe biological data, produce high quality survey forms, and importantly to liaise effectively with the survey co-ordination team, team members and project managers.
Minimum Requirements
Essential for Junior Field Ecologist:
- A keen interest and understanding of British wildlife and conservation – evidenced through voluntary work, training courses, charity memberships, hobbies or related work experience
- Undergraduate degree in Ecology or related subjects
- Proven experience of undertaking habitat and protected species surveys – at least 1 full season of surveying experience
- Well organised with good time management and communication skills
- Ability to record data efficiently and methodically
- Able to complete field surveys proforma to a high standard using iPads/Touchpads and basic software packages (Excel, Word etc)
- Working towards or holds one or more protected species survey licences (for great crested newts or bats)
- Understanding of British law and planning policy relating to ecology
- Hard working and highly motivated, with good interpersonal skills and team approach
- Pro-active, reliable and willing to travel between project sites
- (Ideally) Be a member of, or in application for, CIEEM (graduate, or full membership)
- Full Driving Licence
Essential for Lead Field Ecologist (in addition to above):
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution
- Previous work experience in the ecology sector within a professional consultancy (or relevant NGO or academic experience if applicable)
- Protected species licences and 3+ years’ experience in ecology field surveying
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in ecology or a related discipline
- Field survey experience for a variety of species and habitats
- Evidence of ongoing training / professional development relevant to ecology
- Protected species licences
- In application for or have membership of CIEEM (graduate, or full membership)
- Full Driving Licence
