Description

Overview:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Role Profile:

Experienced herpetologist wanted to volunteer on an amphibian conservation project in the Caribbean for a minimum of 6 months, all expenses paid. The successful applicant will join the high profile Mountain Chicken Frog (Leptodactylus Fallax) Conservation Project on the Caribbean island of Dominica (see www.mountainchicken.org ). Over recent years, this species has been decimated on the island by the lethal disease, amphibian chytridiomycosis.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

You will assist the Dominican Forestry and Wildlife Division in (1) the captive management of mountain chicken frogs in a dedicated conservation breeding facility in Roseau, and (2) conducting field surveys to monitor the infection status and population trends of the surviving wild frogs. Also, there are likely to be opportunities to be involved in assisting mountain chicken conservation outreach activities (e.g. to local schools).

Person Specification:

Applicants must have a proven track record of working with amphibians in captivity and experience working on amphibian monitoring programmes in the field using transect methodologies is desirable. Applicants should also possess a valid driving license.

Please note: Short-listed applicants will be interviewed at the Zoological Society of London and will depart for Dominica shortly thereafter. Travel and medical insurance will be provided.

To Apply:

Applicants will need to upload their CV and covering letter (detailing relevant experience and skills, stating why they want the position and including details of availability) and can do this by clicking the "Apply for this job online" button. If you have any queries regarding this position or when applying through the system please contact Human Resources at hr@zsl.org.
